30 migrant labourers from Chhattisgarh rescued from Sivakasi

In a major crackdown on human trafficking, District Legal Services Authority of Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi with the help of police rescued 30 migrant workers from Chhattisgarh's Raipur. They were rescued from two factories after they sent an SOS to their relatives.

Sivakasi (Tamil Nadu): As many as 30 migrant labourers from Chhattisgarh's Raipur including women were rescued from Tamil Nadu's Sivakasi district by District Legal Services Authority on Saturday.

The labourers were rescued following reports that they were subjected to torture and harassment by their respective employers in Sivakasi.

According to sources, video clipping complaining about their plight in Sivakasi where they were staying for more than two months went viral in the social media.

On being informed about the incident, Srivilliputhur Judges Mariappan and Paramveer lead by Sivakasi Judicial Arbitrators, Revenue Department, Labor Safety and Police team raided cardboard boxes making units at Sukravarpatti and M. Pudupatti. And the officials rescued them, sources said.

The workers complained about non-payment of salary as promised by an agent, who is at large. As they wanted to return home, all the rescued persons were taken to Sivakasi, sources added.

After the rescue operation, workers were sent back to their hometowns. The judges also urged the factory management to properly gather information about people from other states when hiring them and to act without human rights violations, sources further added.
