Chennai: About 1.8 kilograms of gold worth Rs 90.5 lakhs has been seized at Chennai International Airport and two persons have been arrested on Wednesday.
The accused have been identified as Ali Sirajuddin (36) and Babu Badshah (20) from Trichy and Mohammad Gaddafi (49) from Chennai.
According to officials, they had received intelligence of possible gold smuggling. Subsequently, four passengers were intercepted.
On persistent questioning, they are said to have confessed on carrying bundles of gold paste concealed in the rectum.
Following this, the customs department took them to separate rooms and checked them.
"At that time, we seized 1.8 kg of gold from them. Its international value is estimated at Rs 90.5 lakh. We have arrested them and investigation is underway," an official said.
