Rajsamand (Rajasthan): Defying the Hindu tradition of performing last rites only by sons, three sisters at Shankarpura in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district took the mortal remains of their mother to the cremation ground to perform the last rites on Friday morning.
As the daughters decided to take on the responsibility, all the other members of the family accepted their decision and lit the funeral pyre of their mother.
Three daughters, Manisha, Krishna and Sejal stated that they took the decision to challenge the gender-based discrimination widely prevalent in society.
Even now, daughters performing the last rites for parents is considered unusual in our society. But breaking the patriarchal rules and rituals of our society, these daughters had lit the funeral pyre of their mother.
