Barmer: Dalit man ostracised for taking sisters on horses for "Bandoli", imposed Rs 50,000 fine

The victim accused the people of his own community including the village head for imposing him with a fine of Rs 50,000 after his sister on horses for their 'Bandoli', in a break from tradition.

Barmer: A Dalit man in Rajasthan's Barmer district was ostracised by the local community and was imposed with a fine of Rs 50,000 after her took out his sisters on horses for their "Bandoli" in February. The incident came to light on Tuesday after the victim reported this matter to the police.
Siwana police said that a case will be registered against the accused and action will be taken as per the law.

The victim identified Shankar Ram Meghwal, a resident of Meli village in the district has got two sisters and they got them both married in February this year. In a bid to change the patriarchal mindset of the society, Meghwal decided to take the Bandoli of his sisters out on horses. Bandoli is a popular pre-wedding ritual in this part of the country where relatives invite the bride-to-be for a feast before marriage.

Meghwal accused the people from his own local community including the head of the village of imposing him with a fine of Rs 50,000 and barring everyone else from talking to him or his family members, since the community was offended by the Bandoli horse rides of the brides-to-be.

Meghwal said both his sisters got married on Feb. 6, 2023. "As a pre-wedding ritual, we took out the Bandoli of my sisters. I always wanted to promot gender equality in the society. I decided to take out the Bandoli of my sisters on horses. But some narrow minded people of my own community were unhappy about this. And on Tuesday, they imposed me with a fine of Rs 50,000 and the head of the village barred the villagers from talking to me and my family."

I have reported this matter to the police who have assured me of action against the accused, Meghwal added. Siwana police station in- charge Nathu Singh said they are aware of the incident of imposition of fine and a case will be registered against the accused and the police will take action as per law.
