Kota: With the country easing lockdown restrictions, the debate on how herd immunity can boost immunity against coronavirus, has gained momentum.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Professor of Medicine Dr Nirmal Kumar Sharma explained that people above 50 years age and having previous medical issues are dying due to coronavirus.

"The mass hysteria needs to be removed from people's mind. The people who are below 45 years and having no health issues should not panic." Sharma said.

Reportedly, many youths are getting infected with the virus in Kota district.

A 32-year-old man who had kidney related issues from last two years died after getting infected with coronavirus.

"If we analyse data of Kota, India and other foreign countries, it shows that people above 50 years of age having health issues are dying from coronavirus," Dr. Sharma said.

Explaining about herd immunity, Dr. Sharma said: "The virus can be stopped in only two ways. First is to control the transmission of virus or other option is Herd immunity. Controlling virus transmission in India is tough."

Dr Nirmal said: "If people get expose to the virus while working it can boost immunity. If people get exposed sub clinically then they will gain immunity which will enhance herd immunity."

However, herd immunity does not mean to get intentionally exposed as people need to be cautious on the deadly virus.

Dr Nirmal claimed that the age group below 45 having no medical issues are having fatality rate of less than 0.01 per cent.

"The infected people in this age group recovered within 5-7 days," he added.

"It is doubtful that vaccine will be available by this year. It will take time in preparing the vaccine. People should not get scared, " Dr. Sharma said.

Kota district Sample collection in-charge, Dr Saurabh Sharma said: "422 people got infected from virus since April 6. 269 men and 153 women were infected from the virus. If we relate tally according to the age group then younger generation is getting more infected as they are getting exposed to the virus. But, senior citizens having health aliments are dying after suffering from the coronavirus."
