Farmer died of shock after paying Rs 1 lakh fine in Rajasthan

An elderly farmer in Rajasthan's Bundi died of shock after he paid Rs 1 lakh fine to the subdivision officer for violating Covid norms during his daughter's wedding. The family of the deceased has submitted a memorandum to the District Collector seeking financial assistance.

Bundi: Amid strict restrictions put in place to contain the spread of covid, a woman has submitted a memorandum to the Bundi District Collector in Rajasthan demanding financial assistance following the death of her husband due to 'shock' after paying a fine of Rs 1 lakh during her daughter's marriage.

The incident, which has raised certain questions on the administration, took place in Adila village of Kapren municipality area.

Despite a ban on weddings amid Covid restrictions till May 30, Brijmohan Meena married his daughter Indra Bai on May 14.

On getting informed, the subdivision officer and his team reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

During the probe, Brijmohan Meena informed them that all the Covid norms were taken care of including social distancing, mandatory usage of mask and hand sanitisation. He also stated that a fixed number of guests were invited to meet the guidelines issued by the government.

On seeing the probing officials amid the wedding many villagers assembled near Meena's house and one of the personnel shot the video of the site citing violation of covid protocols and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him. The team also threatened Meena with filing a case against him for failing to pay the fine.

Meena's family in the memorandum asserted that he was already unwell and was saving money for his daughter's wedding. After getting threats from officials his condition started worsening.

He paid the fine on May 17 after mortgaging his land and succumbed to shock on May 20 due to lack of treatment following a financial crunch.

The memorandum stated that the only bread-earner of the family died of extensive pressure from the authorities and sought aid from the government owing to poor financial conditions.
