Anna Hazare snubs Fadnavis, turns down request to avoid hunger strike

Social activist Anna Hazare on Friday turned down BJP leaders' approached him requesting not to hold the indefinite fast from January 30. "Why you come here, I told you not to come," Hazare told Maharashtra's leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis, who reached Ralegan Siddhi to discuss the farmer-protest situation with the former.

Mumbai: Social activist Anna Hazare on Friday turned down BJP leaders' approached him requesting not to hold the indefinite fast from January 30.

"Why you come here, I told you not to come," Hazare told Maharashtra's leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis, who reached Ralegan Siddhi to discuss the farmer-protest situation with the former.

Hazare said the Centre's new farm laws were undemocratic and added people's participation was necessary for drafting laws. Expressing his anger at the centre's standpoint he announced indefinite hunger strike from 30 January.

"The government is just giving empty promises due to which I do not have any trust left (in the government)...Let's see, what action the Centre takes on my demands. They have sought time for a month, so I have given them time till January-end. If my demands are not met, I will resume my hunger strike protest. This would be my last protest," he said.

Speaking to reporters here, Fadnavis said the Union agriculture minister had urged him to speak to Hazare, adding that a solution to the demands would arrive at soon.

"Anna has certain issues with the decisions, and I discussed them with him so as to understand his views. Now, I will convey his views to the Union government for further action. Anna is an important personality and we do not want him to start an agitation," Fadnavis said.

Earlier, Hazare announced a hunger strike from 30 January, demanding implementation of Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, include fruits, milk and vegetables in the recommendations. And autonomous status for the central agriculture price commission, minimum support price as per the formula of inputs cost plus 50% additional amount for Agri produce.
