Alert issued to all Punjab prisons over inputs of attack by Landa group

Punjab police have received an input that gangster-turned terrorist Landa and his group may launch an attack on the prisons to free their gang members.

Chandigarh: All the prisons of Punjab have been put on alert after getting an input that Canada-based gangster-turned-terrorist Lakhbir Singh alias Landa is planning to attack the prisons to free his gang members.

According sources, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jails has written a letter to the superintendents of all the prisons in the districts and asked them to be more vigilant. In the letter, the ADGP Jails has asked the prison superintendents to take all measures so as to avoid any untoward incident. Sources said police have received an input that Landa has planned to launch an attack for releasing his associates lodged in prisons across Punjab. Also, senior prison officials may be attacked in the process, the input read.

After receiving the input, an alert has been issued to all the prisons. Most of Landa's gang members are lodged in Amritsar, Bathinda and Goindwal prisons. Police have stepped up their security as well along with initiating an internal checking in all the prisons, said a source. There are nine central prisons in Punjab and one high security prison in Nabha.

In February, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) offered a reward of 15 lakhs on Landa. The NIA officials had announced that the reward would be handed over to anyone providing information about Landa and had also assured not to disclose the details of the informer. It may be mentioned here that Landa faces several criminal cases against him in connection with targetted killings, attacking policemen and smuggling weapons and drugs across the border. He has also been accused in a terror case in Punjab and has cases under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
