Bathinda (Punjab): Though his job requires him to only regulate traffic, Gurbkhs Singh, a traffic cop from Punjab's Bathinda, has taken up the additional responsibility of an essential, but unappreciated job - that of filling potholes.
Singh uses mud and interlocking tiles to fill up the potholes and is assisted by his colleagues.
"Our gurus have said, service to mankind is the biggest act of devotion. I feel happy doing so. I will continue this work even after retirement," he said.
Police officials said Gurbkhs Singh has been rewarded with Rs 1000 cash and his name has been recommended for a promotion.
"Our purpose is to regulate traffic and not harass the public by issuing challans. Cops need to concentrate more on social work and assisting public rather than just issuing challans," said Gurjit Singh Romana, DSP City.
Commuters in Bathinda hailed Gurbkhs Singh for his selfless service, saying that his work is a step towards reducing the number of accidents.
"They are doing the job which nobody else would do. This will help in avoiding accidents. He is taking the same salary, but is doing double the work," said Satinder Pal Singh, a commuter.
