Gauze left inside woman’s abdomen in Odisha, removed after 3 months

A couple, hailing from Bihar's Muzaffarpur has demanded action against a city-based private hospital in Bhubaneswar for the medical negligence. As per reports, the concerned doctor and medical staff had allegedly left a piece of gauze inside the abdomen during abdominal surgery of a woman.

Bhubaneswar: Sheer negligence by the medical staff of a private hospital in Bhubaneswar nearly cost a patient’s life in Odisha as the gauze was allegedly left behind by doctors of a private hospital in Bhubaneswar during abdominal surgery of a woman.

According to sources, the concerned doctor and medical staff had allegedly left a piece of gauze inside the abdomen during abdominal surgery of a woman hailing from Bihar's Muzaffarpur.

Post-surgery, the patient Pushpanjali developed acute pain in her abdomen. Though Pushpanjali’s husband Anand again took her to the same private hospital, the concerned doctor denied to tasked her to conduct an ultrasound diagnostic test.

"After testing my wife, the doctor informed me that the pain could be due to some tumour. The doctor then informed that my wife would be cured after another surgery,” said Anand.

"On July 4, I took Pushpanjali to another private hospital in Bhubaneswar where the doctors there found a piece of gauze inside her abdomen which is allegedly due to the negligence of the Bhubaneswar doctor who operated her last," Anand said.

"My wife is currently undergoing surgery at the AIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Her health condition is not well. I have spent more than Rs 2 lakh. How can I arrange more money for her treatment?. I had repeatedly drawn the attention of the concerned private hospital authorities but they did not respond to me," Anand added.

Meanwhile, ETV Bharat contacted the authorities of the private hospital, but no one responded in this regard. The couple has demanded that the state health department take action against the private hospital.
