Balasore (Odisha): An Odisha mechanic has earned ample appreciation for developing an environment-friendly bike that can run 90km per hour without petrol or diesel and also without making any noise.

Bharat Bhusan Das, a native of Ganja village under Raghunathpur Panchayat of Soro block in Balasore district of Odisha, can be now spotted breezing past the village lanes with his handcrafted 'no-fuel- no maintenance battery-charged bike model'.

According to sources, Das has developed the bike on his expenses from his pockets. The bike would also run at a speed of 90 km per hour without making any noise. There is no need to spend money on petrol, nor there is any botheration about pollution. Once it is charged, the bike would run for 280 km.

While making speed adjustments in the hands of a clock, Bharat attempted as to how the wheel of a bike would rotate with the help of battery. Utilising his knowledge and expertise for years, he was able to develop an eco-friendly motorcycle. He fixed a battery in an old bike of 2002 model in a very delicate manner and succeeded in making the new invention.

"It is completely eco-friendly and any rise in the prices of petrol or diesel does not bother me. Besides, it does not pollute the air or add to global warming in any which way. I have ordered the required pieces of machinery from outside India to make this bike. After opening the engine, two 35 ampere lithium batteries were fixed there. A very high-quality charger had been fitted to the bike to charge the batteries. A dynamo had also been fixed to charge the batteries while the bike is on the run. The bike can run with a speed of 90km per hour without making any noise," explained Bharat who aspires to improve his model and work on it.

"The main aim of developing such a vehicle was to check sound and air pollution. I had thought of making such a bike which would be an alternative to those run on petrol. If either the state government or the central government extend their cooperation, I am confident of making such bikes and cars," he said.

Although Bharat is in the news for developing such a bike, he says that he is worried about the new motor vehicle act. Since the bike is electronic, he had met the Regional Transport Officer of Balasore regarding its registration and insurance matters. As he did not get any satisfactory response from the Officer, he is in a dilemma as to how he would drive the bike on the road, sources said.

While the people of the locality had heaped praises on him for his unique endeavour, he has pleaded for approval of the government for the same. Bharat had spent a sum of Rupees one lakh twenty thousand to make the bike.

Bharat claims that if he is provided with financial assistance at the government level, he can develop more bikes and cars that would run on battery. However, it remains to be seen as to what steps the government and the administration would take in the coming days concerning his invention, sources added.
