Mumbai: According to the report of the National Crime Record Bureau, the state of Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides in the middle of 2019. A total of 1,39,123 people committed suicide in the country in the year 2019. Out of which, Maharashtra accounts for 18,916 suicides.

Tamil Nadu reported 13,493 suicides in 2019 while West Bengal saw 12,655 cases in the same year. Madhya Pradesh recorded cases of 12,457 suicides and Karnataka also reported 11,288 suicides in the year 2019. Maharashtra's share of total suicide cases in the country in the year 2019 has been 13.6 per cent.

- Of the total suicides in the country in 2019, 32.4 per cent of people have committed suicide due to family problems.
- 17.1 per cent of people committed suicide due to illness.
- 5.6 per cent of people due to drug addiction.
- 5.5 per cent suicides due to marital disputes.
- 4.5 per cent suicides due to failure in love.
- 4.2 per cent suicides due to financial problems.
- 2 per cent of people have committed suicide due to failing examinations.
- 2 per cent due to unemployment.
- 1.2 per cent due to business failure.
- 1.1 per cent due to property disputes.
- 0.8 per cent of people committed suicide due to poverty.
