NCP hits out at Maha CM's post-resignation remark on retaining

The NCP on Friday asked why acting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis did not stake claim to form government before Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari when he could talk about retaining power during a press briefing here.

NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said it implied the BJP will resort to poaching.

Earlier, Fadnavis met Koshyari and tendered his resignation. Later, addressing the press conference, Fadnavis said the BJP will retain power in the state.

"While informing about his resignation during a press conference, Devendra Fadnavis claimed only BJP will form government. Why did not he make such a claim before the Honourable Governor then? What it is if not poaching?" Malik tweeted with a hashtag "MaharashtraPoliticalCrisis".

There has been no headway in government formation in the state even a fortnight after Assembly poll results were announced on October 24.

The BJP and Shiv Sena are locked in a tussle over the chief minister's post, resulting in a stalemate despite the poll results giving the saffron alliance a combined seat strength of 161, way past the 145 majority mark in the 288- member House.

CM's post was promised in Shah's presence, can't stand being: Uddhav

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray slammed ally BJP for trying `to prove him a liar', claiming that it had agreed to share the chief minister's post in Maharashtra during his talks with Amit Shah.

He would fulfil the promise made to his father, late Sena founder Bal Thackeray, to install a Shiv Sena chief minister in the state, and does not need Devendra Fadnavis or Shah for this, Uddhav Thackeray said.

Thackeray addressed the media soon after Chief Minister Fadnavis handed over his resignation to Maharashtra Governor, and was asked to continue as caretaker CM.

Reacting strongly to Fadnavis's claim that there had been no agreement on sharing the chief minister's post for two-and-half years, Thackeray, again and again, said that he was hurt that the BJP tried to portray him as a liar.

He did not hold talks with the BJP after the Assembly poll results came in on October 24 as he could not tolerate being called a liar, he said.

The Sena chief also denied Fadnavis's claim that Sena leaders targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He did not attack Modi but criticised the NDA government from time to time over policies, Thackeray said.

Shah made no 50-50 promise to Sena: Gadkari

Reiterating that Shiv Sena was never offered the Chief Minister's post, senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, "There is still time. I feel, for the welfare of people, BJP-Shiv Sena should come together to form the government. As far as 50-50 formula issue is concerned, no such promise was made by Amit Shah ji."

Best wishes if you think you can form govt: Raut to Fadnavis

Talking to the media after Fadnavis's press conference where the BJP leader squarely blamed the Sena for failure to reach a new power-sharing agreement, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said party chief Uddhav Thackeray will make his party's position clear soon.

"If the chief minister says there will be a BJP government again under his leadership, my best wishes to them. In a democracy, those who have majority form the government and get the chief minister's post," Raut said.

"I also say, on behalf of my party, that we can form government if we want and there can be a Shiv Sena chief minister," Raut told reporters.

Fadnavis said such statements will not be tolerated

Statements against PM Modi not tolerable: Fadnavis

"Balasaheb Thackeray is respected by all of us, infact, we even never said anything against Uddhav Thackeray. But in past five years and especially last 10 days, the kind of statements which were made against our top leadership including Modi ji, were not tolerable," Fadnavis said.

17:18 November 08

Wrong that Uddhav ignored my calls, but reached out to Cong-NCP: Fadnavis

Fadnavis claimed that he called Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for breaking the impasse many times, but "Uddhav-ji did not take my calls," he said.

The Shiv Sena's "policy" of not talking with the BJP but holding talks with the opposition Congress and NCP was wrong, he added.

Fadnavis said the alliance had collectively got the mandate

Shocked when Udhhav said 'all options open': Fadnavis

Addressing a media briefing after resigning as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis said, "Unfortunately, the day when results came, Uddhav ji said all options are open for government formation. That was shocking for us as people had given mandate for 'Mahayuti' (alliance) and in such circumstances it was a big question for us as to why he made such a statement."

"I again want to make it clear that it was never decided that for 2.5 years each the CM post will be shared. There was never a decision on this issue. Even Amit Shah ji and Nitin Gadkari ji said this was never decided," he added.

Clock ticks, still no headway in govt formation

With the tenure of the present Maharashtra Assembly all set to end on November 9, there is still no headway in government formation, and the threat of President's Rule looms large.

It has been a fortnight since Assembly poll results were announced on October 24.

The BJP and Shiv Sena are locked in a tussle over the issue of the chief minister's post, resulting in a stalemate in government formation despite the Assembly poll results giving the alliance a combined seat strength of 161, way past the 145 majority mark in the 288-member House.

This now throws up scenarios of permutations and combinations, as the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena-56, NCP-54 and the Congress won 44 seats.

Who forms the government, however, will remain to be seen.

Gadkari in Mumbai, but says won't meet any politician

Union minister and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, who arrived here on Friday, indicated he will not intervene to break the deadlock between his party and the Shiv Sena over sharing power in Maharashtra.

Gadkari's visit triggered speculation in political circles that he may step in to break the fortnight-long BJP- Sena logjam over sharing the chief minister's post, which is delaying government formation in the state.

When contacted by reporters, Gadkari said, "I am not meeting any politician today. I am here to attend a public function today evening." It is unclear whether the Union minister would attend a core committee meeting of Maharashtra BJP leaders scheduled on Friday at the official residence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Gadkari, however, on Thursday had stressed that the BJP should get the post of chief minister because it has won more seats than the Shiv Sena.

Rs 25cr-Rs 50cr being offered to MLAs to switch sides: Congress

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday alleged that sums of "Rs 25 crore to Rs 50 crore" were being offered to MLAs to switch sides in Maharashtra. He claimed Congress MLAs, too, have been contacted over the phone with such offers.

The Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly said the Shiv Sena has claimed one of its MLAs was offered Rs 50 crore to switch sides.

"Our MLAs are also being contacted. Attempts are being made to lure away MLAs with offers of Rs 25 to Rs 50 crore," he alleged while talking to reporters here.

"We have told our MLAs to record such calls so that people of the state know about them," he said.

The Congress leader accused the BJP of taking politics to a new low. However, the BJP has denied allegations it was trying to wean away MLAs from other parties. Wadettiwar denied reports that Congress MLAs are being shifted to Jaipur.

"Some (MLAs) may have gone to unwind after the hard work put in elections," he said.

Wadettiwar was speaking to reporters at his official residence here ahead of a meeting of MLAs later in the day.

The BJP, which emerged as the single largest party in the October 21 Assembly polls winning 105 seats, and its ally Shiv Sena, distant second largest with 56 seats, have not staked claim to form government together or separately till now.

The two parties, which contested the election under the aegis of 'Mahayuti', are bickering over sharing chief ministerial post since October 24, when the poll results were out. The NCP and the Congress won 54 and 44 seats, respectively, in the election to the 288-member assembly where the majority mark is 145.

LIVE: Sena plays hardball with BJP; impasse continues in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The BJP should approach the Shiv Sena only if it agrees to share the chief minister's post with the junior saffron ally in Maharashtra, senior Sena leader Sanjay Raut said on Friday.

Talking to reporters here, he said the BJP should not misuse the provision of "caretaker" government and remain in power in Maharashtra, where there is an impasse over the next dispensation.

Earlier, Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said there was no change in his party's stand on government formation in Maharashtra and reiterated the demand for sharing the chief minister's post.

Meanwhile, as a political slugfest over government formation continues in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray met newly-elected party MLAs at a hotel on Friday. The MLAs are lodged at Hotel Rangsharda to prevent poaching attempts.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should resign as the term of the existing assembly is ending (on November 9), the Sena spokesman said.

To a question on Union minister and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari's trip to Mumbai and possibility of him visiting 'Matoshree' (the residence of Thackerays) to break the logjam over government formation, Raut said the BJP should approach the Sena only if it is willing to share the CM post.

"Gadkari is a resident of Mumbai. There is no news that he is coming. He will go to his house. Has he told you that he is bringing a letter giving the Sena 2.5 years of chief ministership?" he asked.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena, which together have enough seats to form the next government, are engaged in a bitter tussle over power-sharing, particularly over the CM's post. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 105 seats in the recently held Assembly polls. The Shiv Sena got 56 seats in the 288-member Assembly.
