'Left nothing to eat' Pune migrant workers take a long walk back home

A group of migrant workers embarked on a 1,300 km on foot from Pune to their home state in Uttar Pradesh amid the coronavirus lockdown. Following lack of money and food, the migrant workers residing in Pune's Kondhwa decided to walk towards their home.

Pune: Dearth of food and money, forced a group of migrant workers in Maharashtra's Pune to embark on a 1,300 km journey on foot to their home state Uttar Pradesh amid coronavirus induced lockdown.

Left with no option, the stranded migrants residing in Pune's Kondhwa decided to walk towards their home as they were fearing starvation if they continue to remain in city.

Carrying heavy luggage on their heads and shoulders, they left from the city late night.

"We are tired of trying to get into one of the trains. They make us stand in queues but don't take our forms. What can be done? We had been surviving on one meal a day for the past few days. God knows what will happen to us on road now, but we have come out believing in him," said a migrant worker, who is walking towards his home state Uttar Pradesh.

"We have no food left. If we go to our village, we'll at least be able to do farming and eat something," said another migrant worker.

The highways that lead villagers to cities in search for better livelihood now turning them back for the same reason.
