Mumbai: The number of deaths due to novel coronavirus in Maharashtra are on the rise and the state's health facilities, responsible for a large number of them, stands exposed.

The ever-increasing number of COVID-19 patients continues to remain a matter of concern for the government, administration and healthcare systems, and the complaints regarding non-availability of beds in the hospitals and delay in ambulance services have exposed the inability of Maharashtra government to deal with the unparalleled health crisis so far.

As the number of coronavirus cases in the state breached the 2-lakh mark on Monday this week, ETV Bharat accessed the situation and preparedness of the health facilities to deal with the ongoing pandemic.

Here is a look at the situation of the healthcare systems in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Thane, and its readiness to fight against the deadly virus.

  • The coronavirus tally in Mumbai rose to 86,132 on Tuesday with the addition of 806 new cases - lowest single-day figure in nearly two months while the death of 64 patients took the toll near the 5,000-mark. Four new jumbo facilities for Covid-19 patients, temporarily constructed in open fields, were inaugurated on Tuesday, adding 3,520 new beds, including 228 for intensive care units (ICU), to the city’s treatment facility.
  • While Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have been emphasising on increasing testing, a total of one lakh antigen testing kits were brought by both the cities, to detect the infection early and thereby, contain the disease. The Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal administration is gearing up to tackle the situation by creating an additional bed space of 5,000. As of Tuesday, the number of positive cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad crossed the 5,000 mark. Meanwhile, in Pune around 500 ICU facilities and 250 ventilators have been made available at COVID-19 designated hospitals in the city.
  • In Nashik city, the administration seems to have made strong preparations to fight against the deadly virus. The municipal and district hospitals in the city have claimed that 28 private hospitals with a capacity of 1,576 beds are fully-equipped to treat coronavirus patients. Maharashtra's Nashik district registered nine more coronavirus deaths, taking the toll near the 300-mark on Tuesday, while the case count increased to 5,796 after 133 persons tested positive.
  • While Nagpur was tackling the coronavirus crisis effectively, since the detection of the first coronavirus positive case on March 11. But slowly the situation turned grim due to ease in lockdown restrictions and the influx of people from other states. On Tuesday morning, the coronavirus positive cases of Nagpur reached 25. But, late afternoon another 46 added and the total number stood at 71. With these, the city crossed 1,800 mark taking the cumulative number to 1,847.
