Monsoon storms into Maharashtra: Trains, traffic hit in Mumbai

Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on Wednesday with the advance of the monsoon in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded rainfall in Santacruz at 59.6 mm and in Colaba at 77.4 mm.

Mumbai: The south-west monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday, the IMD announced as heavy rains lashed the country's financial capital and suburbs since early morning.

A high tide of over four metres is expected around noon in the Arabian Sea, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. BMC added that the island city, eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded 48.49 mm, 66.99 mm and 48.99 mm rain, respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Wednesday.

Heavy rain interrupted train and bus services

Water-logging was reported in some low-lying areas affecting local train and bus services. "Due to heavy rains & waterlogging near Chunabhatti railway station, train services on Harbour line between CSMT- Vashi suspended from 10.20 am. On Main line due to waterlogging in Sion-Kurla section, services have been suspended from CSMT- Thane from 10.20 am, informed Central railway CPRO. Mumbai Local train services between Kurla & CSMT halted as water is flowing over tracks between Kurla & Sion stations. Traffic stopped at 9.50 am, decision taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident. Traffic will resume as soon as water recedes, Central railway CPRO further said.

"It's monsoon arrival in Mumbai today," said Dr Jayanta Sarkar, head of the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai office. Several parts of the city and suburbs witnessed heavy rainfall along with thunder in the morning. According to the IMD, the Colaba observatory (representative of south Mumbai) received 77.4 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory (representative of the suburbs) recorded 59.6 mm downpour in the last 24 hours.

The IMD has predicted cloudy sky with moderate rain/ thundershowers in the city and suburbs. There is also a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The IMD on Saturday confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Maharashtra as it reached Harnai in the coastal Ratnagiri district. But, despite favourable conditions, the monsoon's further progress seemed to be slow.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has visited the Disaster Management Cell of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to take stock of the situation in the city caused by heavy rainfall.

Shubhangi Bhute, an official of IMD Mumbai has informed that monsoon rains have started in the Konkan region of Goa and Maharashtra. She has informed that the regional IMD department has announced a 'Red' and 'Orange' alert in the Konkan region including Mumbai for the next couple of days.
