Thane: With no means to earn their livelihood amid pandemic, sex-workers decided to quit prostitution and look for alternate profession here in Maharashtra.
Four women, who were in the business of prostitution for the past 14 years, are determined to join the mainstream society.
"We will be self-sufficient and will lead a normal life," said a 30-year-old woman who left the sex trade.
The Hanuman hill area of Bhiwandi is a home for prostitutes in Maharashtra.
A social organisation trained 500 sex-workers to be self-reliant and find other means of living amid pandemic.
With the help of the organisation, these four women were provided with a house named 'Chichi House'.
"The Malayalam word Chichi house means sister's house. Bringing these women back to the society gave me immense satisfaction, "said Swati Khan.
Swati Singh Khan, head of Shri Sai Seva Sanstha started the work to educate the sex workers about social health four years back.
The workers decided to quit prostitution under the leadership of Swati Khan after she grew an affectionate bond with them during the lockdown.
The organisation along with other social welfare groups provided food and groceries to them amid lockdown.
Swati Khan made arrangements for the training of 25 women so that they can earn their livelihood.
The women were trained packaging of incense sticks and making of Diwali lights. Meanwhile, Swati Khan rented a house for the four women after they decided to quit prostitution.
The inauguration ceremony of the house was held in the presence of Senior Inspector Subhash Kokate.
