Car swallowed by sinkhole in Mumbai's Ghatkopar

A parked car was completely swallowed by a sinkhole at a residential complex in Mumbai. As per police officials, there used to be a small well in the area which was later filled with concrete to be converted into a parking spot.

Mumbai (Maharashtra): A vehicle on Sunday has been completely swallowed by a sinkhole in a residential complex in Ghatkopar in Mumbai.

As per police officials, there used to be a small well in the area which was later filled with concrete to be converted into a parking spot. The concrete was washed away due to a heavy downpour in Mumbai since Tuesday. The incident took place at society at Ghatkopar West Kama Lane.

"Officers and staff of the local Ghatkopar police station were present at the spot", said Nagraj Majge, Inspector in charge of Ghatkopar Traffic Department. "Later, a crane was brought to take out the car. No injuries have been reported so far", he added.

According to the sources, 13 deaths have been reported in the last four days in various incidents due to the heavy downpour in the megacity. 11 people lost their lives after a residential structure collapsed in the New Collector compound, Malad West of Mumbai on Wednesday night. Apart from that 5 vehicles have been damaged due to the collapse of the security wall and land in the yard of the training centre at Powai.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in Maharashtra for the next five days, with an orange alert issued for Mumbai on Friday. Traffic jams for hours, waterlogging on streets brought life to a standstill in Mumbai. Earlier, the Mayor of Mumbai Kishori Kishor Pednekar said that 458 pumps have been installed to pump out the rainwater and work is underway to cover 73000 manholes.
