Pune: Nine girls were on the verge of drowning while swimming in the Khadakwasla Dam water near Gohe Khurd village on Monday. Local residents somehow managed to rescue seven of them while remaining two, who were initially missing were found dead.
Police sources said that all the girls are from Buldhana district. They had gone for swimming in the Khadakwasla Dam near Kalmadi Farm House in Gohe Khurd village early this morning. It seems that the girls could not predict the depth of water resulting which they started drowning, police said.
Luckily, a group of pilgrims who were performing funeral rituals spotted the group of girls. They rushed to save them and could rescue seven of the girls. But, two girls were missing.

After learning about the incident, local people informed the Haveli police station and soon a police team reached the spot. Officials from the PMRDA too arrived later to assist the police. A search operation was conducted for the two missing girls. Sources said after searching for a long time, officials found the two bodies.
The incident has come only a day after a man reportedly drowned while swimming in the canal near the same dam. The 28-year-old man, named Zubair Ismail Shaikh, who was a resident of Bhawani Peth in Pune had gone for swimming in a canal on the backside of Khadakwasla Dam on 14 May. He had come there along with three friends but since his friends did not know swimming they did not venture into the water.
