Mandakini river floods Chitrakoot town in MP

The overflowing Mandakini river swept through Chitrakoot town after heavy showers battered Satna district in Madhya Pradesh.

Satna (Madhya Pradesh): Following two days of heavy rains in Satna district, the Mandakini river breached its banks and swept through Chitrakoot town and surrounding areas.

The only bridge connecting the two sides of the river was submerged cutting off access. Shops and temples in Chitrakoot's Ramghat were also hit by flooding.

State authorities organised rescue operations and requested people to move to safer locations as water levels in the river kept rising.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an 'orange alert' with a forecast of very heavy rainfall in eight districts of Madhya Pradesh till Friday.

In the last 24 hours, Satna district received 132.6 mm rainfall.
