Dowry cruelty: Gwalior woman forced to drink acid by husband

Madhya Pradesh police arrested a man for allegedly forcing his wife to consume acid in Dabra town of Gwalior. He has been booked under the charges of dowry harassment and domestic violence. Virendra Kumar Jatav demanded a dowry of Rs 3 lakh from his wife Shashi to buy a car but she refused to speak to her parents.

Gwalior: The police in Madhya Pradesh have arrested a man for allegedly forcing his wife to drink acid in Dabra town of Gwalior on Wednesday. Police swung into action after Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal took cognizance of the incident. Due to alleged negligence, the Assistant sub-inspector has also been suspended while Dabra police station in-charge Vinayak Shukla has been also been summoned.

According to the report, the accused has been identified as Virendra Kumar Jatav and he has been booked under charges of dowry harassment and domestic violence. "Virendra Kumar Jatav sought dowry of Rs 3 lakh from his wife Shashi to buy a car. When she denied to speak to her parents for money, Jatav thrashed her and forced her to consume acid following which her health started deteriorating," police said.

The doctors informed that Shashi was rushed to a Delhi hospital in serious condition as her internal organs were damaged. The matter came to light after Shashi recorded her statement against Jatav before SDM. "Shashi Jatav, from Ghatigaon Simaria married to Virendra Kumar Jatav from Dabra on April 17. Her parents had spent nearly Rs 10 lakh on the marriage. Jatav was pressurizing her to get more money from her parents which led to Shashi's assault," police informed.

Taking cognizance of the matter, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) team met Shashi. DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal also took note of the incident and asked Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to look into the matter through a tweet. She demanded the arrest of the accused at the earliest following which Virendra Kumar Jatav was held by the police.
