Bhopal: Fuel prices continue to soar across India and touched a record high in Madhya Pradesh as petrol price is retailing at Rs 113.10 per litre and diesel at Rs 101.35 per litre in Anupur district. This is reportedly the highest price of petrol and diesel across the country. Other cities of the state have also witnessed an increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. In the capital city Bhopal, petrol now costs Rs 110.27 whereas diesel is retailing at Rs 98.72 per litre.
In Madhya Pradesh, 33 per cent tax is levied on petrol, apart from it, cess is also levied. At present, petrol is attracting a cess of Rs 4.50 per litre, while diesel is taxed at 23 per cent in the state. Following the tax and cess, some municipal corporations including Bhopal also impose a separate cess on petrol.
The central and state taxes make up for 60 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54 per cent of diesel. Centre levies Rs 32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 31.80 a litre on diesel. The difference in prices in states occurs on account of local taxes like VAT or freight charges. Rajasthan levies the highest VAT on petrol and diesel in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh.
