Thrissur: The Viyyur Central Prison in Kerala's Thrissur has introduced biryani, chapatis and curries in its food menu for online delivery. The prison gained popularity through its Freedom Food Factory- a canteen managed and run by the inmates.
It has now expanded its customer base by partnering with the online food delivery chain ‘Swiggy’.
Previously, the food prepared inside was sold from a counter outside the prison. A special menu has been decided upon for online delivery with the over-the-counter system running as it is.
Priced at Rs 127, the ‘Freedom Combo Lunch’ includes 300 gms of biryani, a roasted chicken leg piece, three chapatis, chicken curry, pickle, salad, a cupcake and mineral water.
The online system of delivery would provide the customers with a plantain leaf for serving. It is a brand new experiment- first in the country that serves online Biriyani on a banana leaf.
The new service has started from July 1 onwards and the initial target is to sell about 100 combos a day.
"We have further plans to introduce more special combos once and if the present combo becomes a hit," said the jail authorities.
The Viyyur Central Prison has always indulged into generating new and innovative ideas and taking newer initiatives for the inmates. One of these ideas was Freedom Melody Radio and a band.
