Mass malpractice during Btech semester exams; University seizes mobile phones

Kerala Technological University syndicate Examination subcommittee found out that students used Whatsapp group for copying during the examination.

Thiruvananthapuram: Shedding more light on the incident of mass copying during B Tech third semester examination at the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University in Kerala, the University Syndicate Examination Sub Committee on Tuesday found that the students had used Whatsapp for the malpractice.

The students were found to have kept one mobile phone outside the exam hall and brought in another phone to mislead the invigilators. Whatsapp groups were created for each subject and the answers for the questions, worth 75 marks, were found to have been passed through this group.

Over 28 mobile phones were seized from four engineering colleges under the Kerala Technological University (KTU) in Thiruvananthapuram, where the malpractice was reported during the exams. Out of the 28 phones, 16 were confiscated from one college. While 10 mobile phones were seized from another college, two phones were confiscated from two other colleges.

More clarity on the incident was gained when the KTU Syndicate Examination Sub Committee probed the matter and collected evidence on the incident through an online hearing on Tuesday.

The committee, including Technological University Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr S Ayub, Syndicate Sub Committee members Professor P O J Labba and Examination Controller Dr K R Kiran, collected evidence on the mass copying incident from the Principals of the four colleges involved. The University had officially cancelled the examination on finding out the malpractice during the examination.
