Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government on Monday decided to convene a special session of the state assembly on December 23 to discuss the three contentious farm laws enacted by the Centre recently.
According to sources, the decision in this regard was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan this morning.
The State cabinet met on Monday and decided to hold a special session to discuss the possibilities of forming an alternative law to reject the Centre’s three farm bills. The Cabinet has also decided to form a subcommittee to study the legalities of this aspect, sources said.
The Agriculture Department will form the subcommittee and the State Assembly would pass a resolution against the farm laws in the special session to be convened this week. The resolution would demand the withdrawal of the controversial farm laws by the Centre, sources added.
The Cabinet has decided to approach the State Governor Arif Mohammed Khan to convene a special Assembly session on 23rd of this month to discuss and pass the resolution against the farm bills.
Notably, the farmers are apprehending that the new laws will pave the way for a dismantling of the Minimum Support Price mechanism and the mandi system, leaving them to the "mercy" of big corporates, which the government insists are misplaced.
