Kannur (Kerala): The policemen at Kudiyanmala police station in Kerala's Kannur district have set an excellent example by growing vegetables in a garden adjacent to their office.
Even amidst their hectic work schedule and duties, these policemen cleared about an acre of land near the police station compound which was covered with wild bushes and started vegetable farming on it.
A year ago, Sub-Inspector Dhijesh, wanted to do something with the land around this station and thought of an idea - to grow fruit and vegetables in the front yard and backyard.
He rounded up his officers and proposed the idea of an organic farm around the station. To his utter surprise, most of the person who reported to him showed overwhelming support.
The cops nurture the vegetables in organic method and supply the fresh produce to the police station mess.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Circle Inspector, Pradeep J said, "Every single day, the officers farmed, sometimes in plainclothes but mostly in their uniforms as they were still on duty. Months passed and little-by-little their labour, quite literally, bore fruit. The station farm boasts different vegetables, in the compound."
"Our official, Mathew, who is also a good farmer and other cops here are totally into maintaining their vegetable farm in the station premises. Now, they are busy with the harvest in their ‘police station farm’ after their duty hours. All the team members are engaged in farming activities, be it watering, de-weeding or fertilising, during their leisure time. The harvested vegetables would be used in the police canteen. Those vegetables in surplus would be sold off to the public at a very low price," he said.
Through this farming initiative using only organic manure, these policemen at Kudiyanmala have set an example. They teach a lesson through their farming - on how each of us can also grow our own vegetables even though we have very little time after work hours.
