Ernakulam(Kerala): Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case on the alleged foreign funds' violation in the Life Mission Project in Vadakkanchery in Kerala.
The CBI has submitted the preliminary report regarding the case in the Court here on Friday. The CBI has filed charges based on the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. Unitac Builders owner Santhosh Eapan has been named the first accused in the case.
CBI has filed the case based on the allegations that the funds were received from the foreign company Red Crescent in violation of the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA).
State government receiving foreign funds without the approval of the Central Government is a protocol violation as per rules. Earlier, the Centre had also pointed out that there has been a violation in the Life Mission project.
The CBI team is looking into the possible misappropriation of foreign funds in the project.
Swapna Suresh, the key accused in gold smuggling through diplomatic baggage channel in Thiruvananthapuram, had revealed that the one crore rupees recovered from her bank locker by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) were the commission in the Life Mission project. In her statement to the Enforcement Directorate, she had stated that the Unitac builders had also given a commission for the allotment of the project.
The State Government had ordered a vigilance probe into the possible violation in the Life Mission project recently. The CBI probe into the case follows the vigilance investigation.
The opposition had been demanding a CBI probe into the case and leaders like Anil Akkara had complained to the CBI seeking the agency's probe in the case.
