Chandravalli caves: Exemplary amalgamation of history, scenic beauty

Apart from its scenic beauty, the Chandravalli cave temple, about three kilometres away from Karnataka's Chitradurga district, has a historical significance as well. It is believed that Mayurasharma, the founder of the Kadamba Kingdom of Banavasi would use the ancient cave as a protective shelter in times of war. The Kadamba Kingdom was the earliest native kingdom to rule over what is today the state of Karnataka.

Chitradurga (Karnataka): About three kilometre away from Karnataka's Chitradurga district, there lies an ancient wonder. Chandravalli is an 80-feet deep cave temple within the picturesque Chandravalli garden of Ankali math.

The Archaeological Survey of India-protected cave is located in the midst of three hills, Chitradurga, Cholagudda and Kirubana­ Kallu. A lake adds to the charm of this scenic cave temple.

Located between two giant monolithic rocks, the cave is also known as Ankali Mutt. Legend has it that saints and sages from the nearby Ankalagi and Belgaum areas would come here to meditate.

Apart from its scenic beauty, the cave temple has a historical significance as well. It is believed that Mayurasharma, the founder of the Kadamba Kingdom of Banavasi would use the ancient cave as a protective shelter in times of war. The Kadamba Kingdom was the earliest native kingdom to rule over what is today the state of Karnataka.

After the destruction of the Kadamba kingdom, the cave would provide shelter to the local shepherds, who would use it for taking rest.

The cave also served as a centre for meditation. Paradeshappa Swamiji, a high-ranking priest of the Ankali Mutt, who came to the present day Karnataka to preach Hindu religion, took shelter in the same cave and breathed his last in here. Swamiji's grave can also be found within the cave.

Nothing short of a treasure trove, the cave has three main doors - Nandi Gate, Gaja Gate and Simha Gate. It also consists of Paradeshappa Swamiji's gadduge (worshipping spot), a Shiva Linga, a bathing pool, secret roads, a bedroom, and a treasury room, among other historic things.

There is an inexplicable magical aura surrounding the caves, with its carvings of Hindu and Buddhist symbols and remnants of pre-historic paintings in vegetable colours.

Withstanding the test of time, the mysterious caves of Chandravalli attracts tourists from all over the country.

chitradurga: It is an ancient cave which acting as ear of kings secret talks. Even the sages and saints were living years together in this cave. Lets know what is the speciality of this cave. 



This cave is 3km away from Chithradurga. The cave which is 80 feet deep is in Chandravalli garden of Ankali math. History says Kadamba's king Mayoora varma was using the same cave as a protective shield during war. Later after the distruction of Kadamba kingdom shepherds used it fpr taking rest as well as secret discussions they say.

Also during war kings used to protect their family with the help of this cave itself. Paradeshappa swamiji of Ankali math who came to preech hindu religion stayed here and left his last breath here. we can find his grave as a proof in the cave says historians.  Cave along with different forts and Shivalinga attracts the tourists.

Speciality of the cave: 

 

The historic cave has three main doors, namely the Nandi Gate, Gaja Gate and Simha Gate. There is also a secret discussing room, The Paradeshappa Swamiji's gadduge(worshing spot), The Shiva Linga to worship, A small bathing pool, Small rooms to keep lamps(diya), secret roads, the bedroom, the treasury room etc. In such a dark cave we can find the alternative system they created in order to allow wind, light and drinking water fecility.



Cave with these many specialities have to be protected by the department of Archeology. Also if lighting fecility is created in the cave then it would attract still more visitors says localites.

ಬೃಹತ್ ಕಲ್ಲುಬಂಡೆ... ಅದರಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಗುಹೆ... ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಕೊಠಡಿಗಳು... ಹೌದು, ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದಿಂದ 3 ಕಿಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗುಹೆ. 80 ಅಡಿ ಆಳದ ಈ ಗುಹೆ ಚಂದ್ರವಳ್ಳಿ ತೋಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅಂಕಲಿ    ಮಠದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅಂದಿನ ಕಂದಂಬ ಅರಸ ಮಯೂರ ವರ್ಮಾ ಯುದ್ಧದ ವೇಳೆ ಇದೇ ಗುಹೆಯನ್ನ ರಕ್ಷಾ ಕವಚದಂತೆ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದು ಇತಿಹಾಸ. ಆದ್ರೆ ಕದಂಬ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ ಅಳಿದ ನಂತರ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರರು ಇದೇ ಗುಹೆಯನ್ನ ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಾಗೂ ರಹಸ್ಯ ಮಾತುಕತೆಗೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದು ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.  



ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಯುದ್ಧದ ವೇಳೆ ರಾಜರು ತಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಇದೇ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಂತೆ. ಕಾಲಾನಂತರ  ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮ ಸಾರಲು ಬಂದಿದ್ದ, ಅಂಕಲಿ ಮಠದ ಪರದೇಶಪ್ಪ ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿ ಇದೇ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವರ್ಷ ಇದ್ದು,  ನಂತರ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಲಿಂಗೈಕ್ಯರಾದರಂತೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿಯ ಸಮಾಧಿ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಅಂತಾರೆ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರು. ಗುಹೆಯ ಜೊತೆ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಕೋಟೆಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ತನ್ನತ್ತ ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ.

ಗುಹೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ ಏನು...?



ಈ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ನಂದಿ ದ್ವಾರ, ಗಜ ದ್ವಾರ, ಸಿಂಹ ದ್ವಾರ ಎಂಬ ಮೂರು ದ್ವಾರಗಳಿವೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ರಹಸ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಕೋಣೆ, ಪರದೇಶಪ್ಪ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಜೀಯ ಗದ್ದುಗೆ, ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ, ಪುಟ್ಟ ಸ್ನಾನದ ಕೊಳ, ದೀಪಗಳನ್ನು ಇಡಲು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕೋಣೆಗಳು, ರಹಸ್ಯ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳು, ಮಲಗುವ ಕೋಣೆ, ಖಜಾನೆ ರೂಮ್ ಕೂಡ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಕತ್ತಲ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಳಿ, ಬೆಳಕು, ಕುಡಿಯುವ ನೀರಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಜನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನ ಕೂಡ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. 



ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ವಿಶೇಷತೆ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ 

ಕೋಟೆನಾಡಿನ ಈ ಗುಹೆಯನ್ನ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ ಇಲಾಖೆ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕಿದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೈಟಿಂಗ್ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ರೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಇತ್ತ ಕಣ್ಣು ಹಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅನ್ನೋದು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.
