Kolar(Karnataka): At least six students have drowned during Ganesha idol immersion in Maradaghatta village of Kolar on Tuesday.

Four girls and two boys died after drowning in Marikunte lake

According to information, four girls and two boys went to Marikunte lake to immerse their handcrafted clay Ganesha idol.

As Tuesday was a holiday for schools on account of Moharram, the children of Maradaghatta, about 100 km from here, in the 11-14 age group, chose to play by making a Ganesha idol and immerse it. They made an idol by collecting clay from the tank in the morning and 'immersed' it after "performing poojas" when the mishap occurred, police said.

A few villagers rushed to the lake to rescue them, the students were admitted to KGF Government Hospital where they were declared dead by the doctors.

A case of unnatural death has been registered with Baithamangala police station under whose jurisdiction it falls.

However, Baithamangala police said the children were out for a swim in Maradaghatta lake and had drowned.
