Koppala is arguably one of the backward districts in Karnataka. Every year, this region features at the bottom of the state's ranking grid as far as the SSLC and PUC results are concerned.

To overcome this, the Department of Education has in the recent past launched several programmes. This year, the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Koppala has been making personal visits to the houses of these SSLC students in order to motivate them and promote in them the habit of studying. With the official's visits, the students, too, have decided to give up their TV screen time and focus on studies instead.

Parents of at least 50 SSLC students of Government High School, Mainalli, hailing from three villages -- Mainalli, Bikanalli and Handrala -- have disconnected TV cable and dish networks for three months.

Koppal BEO Umesh Pooja said the education department had been doing its best to ensure the students clear the exam with flying colours.
