Bengaluru: Bengaluru South Division Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) K. Annamalai resigned from his job, here on Tuesday.
In a letter to his friends and well-wishers, he confirmed the resignation and also cited the death of IPS officer Madhukar Shetty as one of the reasons for re-examining his own life.
“I had submitted my resignation from the Indian Police Service (IPS). It might take some time for the official process to be over. I am jumping the gun as I wanted to set straight all of the speculations going around,” said Annamalai
According to media reports, Annamalai had planned to resign after Lok Sabha elections. Now the speculations are rife that the IPS officer may join politics.
Asked about rumours of his joining politics in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai said life itself was too big to talk of opportunities for a mortal like him.
“For people who are speculating what’s next for me. I am too small a man to have lofty ambitions. I just wanted to take some time out and enjoy those small things in life, which I had missed out, be a good father to my son — who deserves every bit of my time as he is fast growing up, get into farming back home and see whether my sheep still listens to me as I am no more a cop,” he said.
Since his posting in Karnataka as a young IPS officer in 2011, Annamalai held various senior posts, including Superintendent of Police in districts like Chikmagalur and Udupi in the state’s west coastal districts.
Terming the job of a policeman as the closest to God, the officer said a high-pressure job like that of a policeman had its own shortcomings as he had to miss many functions and could not be with the people who stood by him in times of need.
After taking charge, he earned a reputation for cracking down on criminal activities in the coastal district. He was also popularly referred to as the 'Singam' of Udupi after news of him standing up to errant bike riders spread in the district.
Annamalai frequently interacted with students studying in colleges, particularly in Manipal, where he implemented stringent rules restricting nightlife in the student town. Bars and restaurants were forcibly closed at 11:30 pm while students in the town were asked to identify and explain themselves if they were caught by the police after midnight.
A 2011 batch IPS officer, Annamalai, hails from Karur in Tamil Nadu. He is a graduate of PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore and Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow. He was first posted as the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Karkala sub-division in Udupi district in 2013. He was later promoted to SP of Udupi on January 1' 2015. Annamalai took over as DCP of Bengaluru (South) in October 2018.
