Bengaluru: Narayana Nethralaya chief Dr Bhujanga Shetty passes away

Dr Bhujanga Shetty started with a small clinic in the 80s and later established Narayana Super Specialty Eye Hospital in Bengaluru. Karnataka CM-designate Siddaramaiah said Dr Bhujanga Shetty is a light to millions of people and their families as he gave them eyesight.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) : Renowned ophthalmologist Dr Bhujanga Shetty (69), head of Narayana Nethralaya, passed away on Friday. As usual, he went home on Friday evening after seeing patients and suffered a heart attack. He was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Yeshwantpur, but the treatment was unsuccessful.

Dr Bhujanga Shetty did his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College (BMC) in 1978. He did Ophthalmology Residency in 1982 at Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, BMC. Starting with a small clinic in the 80s, he later established Karnataka's largest Narayana Super Specialty Eye Hospital. He served as a cataract and phacoemulsification surgeon.

Conveying his condolences, Karnataka CM-designate Siddaramaiah said the news of the death of renowned ophthalmologist Dr Bhujanga Shetty has come as a shock. Bhujanga Shetty is a light to millions of people and their families as he gave them sight. Siddaramaiah wrote on his Twitter account that he prays for the soul of the deceased to get eternal peace and for his family members to get the strength to bear the pain.

Deputy CM-designate D K Shivakumar condoled the death of Bhujanga Shetty. The KPCC president said that Bhujanga Shetty's service in the field of health is immense and he was one of the greatest doctors the state has ever seen. Shivakumar expressed condolences that he was a farsighted doctor who created awareness about health among people.

Shivakumar further said that as the head of Narayana Nethralaya, Bhujanga Shetty played an important role in raising this institution to the highest level. He has received many awards including the Rajyotsava Puraskar in 2010. Heartbroken to hear the news of Bhujanga Shetty's death and may his soul rest in peace, Shivakumar said.

BJP leader and former CM Basavaraj Bommai condoled the death and said it was very sad to know about the death of renowned ophthalmologist Dr Bhujanga Shetty. With the death of Bhujanga Shetty, who brought light to the lives of thousands of blind people through eye surgery, the state has lost a devoted ophthalmologist, he said.
