Karnataka: Irked over death, COVID-19 patient's family sets ambulance on fire

A coronavirus patient's family set an ambulance on fire and protested against the hospital authorities after their kin died while undergoing treatment in Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences. The incident took place on Wednesday night.

Belagavi (Karnataka): Vexed over the death of their coronavirus-affected kin, family members set an ambulance on fire after he succumbed to the illness while undergoing treatment at the Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences.

The incident occurred late night on Wednesday. According to the reports, the patient was admitted to the hospital on July 19, after his breathing condition deteriorated. Reportedly, soon after his death, a mob of 100 people gathered near the hospital and they pelted stones besides abusing the hospital staffers.

Belagavi Police Commissioner said, "Ambulance was empty. Around 40 people tried to enter the hospital. Case registered."

Firefighters rushed to the site; soon City Police Commissioner Thyagarajan, SP Lakshman Nimbargi took cognizance of the matter.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka on Thursday reported 44,146 active coronavirus cases with 1,464 fatalities reported so far.
