Shivamogga (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday said that those owning tractors and other vehicles must return their Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration cards immediately, failing which stringent legal action would be initiated.
Earlier yesterday, Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister Umesh Katti had asked people possessing BPL ration cards, despite being ineligible on account of owning either a two-wheeler, TV, fridge or over five acres of land, to surrender them before March 31 or face legal action.
Speaking to reporters in Shivamogga today, Chief Minister Yediyurappa said that many people who were well-off, were obtaining BPL cards through fake documents.
"I have already instructed the DCs of all districts to conduct an inquiry about BPL cardholders. Wealthy people have to return the BPL cards, otherwise face strict action," he said.

"Proper supply of PDS grains must be ensured to eligible beneficiaries and action has to be taken to prevent misuse of the benefits by ineligible persons," he added.
Earlier yesterday Minister Umesh Katti had said: "There are parameters for possessing a BPL card. They should not have more than five acres of land, motorcycle, TV or fridge. Those who don't qualify on these parameters should return the cards or else we will do it."
He said anyone earning more than Rs 1.20 lakh annually should not use BPL cards and has to return it before March 31.
