Bengaluru: In a bid to help the urban poor in the city, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits has started distributing food packets free of charge.

The civic body has also said that identification proof is not mandatory to obtain the free food packets at Indira Canteens in the city.

Earlier, the BBMP asked that the migrant workers and labourers provide identification proof to the suppliers in order to obtain the food packets.

But due to the increasing number of beneficiaries facing trouble in obtaining the food packets because of issues with ID cards, the BBMP Chief Commissioner, Gourav Gupta issued a clarification that identification proofs are not mandatory.

"Each beneficiary will be given a maximum of three food packets, depending on the total number of family members on their ration card and identification proof is not mandatory to obtain the free food packets being distributed at Indira Canteens in Bengaluru from Thursday," said, Gupta.

Those coming to get lunch packets at the canteens will have to comply with COVID-19 norms (wearing of masks and maintenance of social distancing while standing in queues), the civic body said.

Karnataka government has imposed a lockdown from 6 am on May 10 till 6 am on May 24 amid rising cases of coronavirus infection. The state has as many as 5,71,026 active COVID-19 cases.
