Death toll in contaminated water consumption rises to 3 in Karnataka, 50 hospitalised

Three died and 50 have been hospitalised after drinking the contaminated water at Makarabbi village in Huvinahadagali taluk of Vijayanagara district.

Vijayanagara (Karnataka): The death toll in the contaminated water drinking cases has been increased to three at Makarabbi village in Huvinahadagali taluk of Vijayanagara district. While more than 50 people of Makarabbi village fell ill and have been admitted to a hospital on September 23 after drinking the contaminated water. Sixty-year-old man Neelappa died on September 28 after drinking the water. Now, Lakkamma and Basamma, two elderly women, too, breathed their last while undergoing treatment at NIMS in Bellary. They were admitted to the hospital with diarrhoea and vomiting a few days ago after drinking the contaminated water.

It is learnt that there are three borewells at Makarabbi village through which drinking water is being provided to people. According to villagers, among these three borewells, the water of two borewells is reportedly not good for consumption. It is learnt that the water was being supplied from these two borewells. Meanwhile, villagers alleged the negligence of the gram panchayat for the incident as it has been supplying the contaminated water for drinking. More than 200 people have been affected by contaminated water till date and they are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Bellary, Hospet and Hubli.
