Chikkamagaluru (Karnataka): The hill ranges in Chikkamagaluru district have become a purple paradise again - thanks to the blooming of the exquisite Kuruvanji flowers (Strobilanthes Kunthiana).
The flowers are also called 'Gurgi Hoovu' by the locals and bloom only once in 12 years. It has now enhanced the beauty of Chandradrona Hill range in the Malnad region. The hills, which were all lush green so far, are now taking a purple hue with the blooming of these rare flowers and are attracting the tourists.
Kuruvanji blooms only in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghat forest region and is hence common in Chandradrona, Devara Mane, Charmudi and other hills in the land of coffee. Gurgi flowers have several varieties. Some varieties bloom once in 5, 7, 12 and 14 years.
Since the Western Ghats is a reserved forest area, the blooming of these flowers is not facing any threat at present. Thus, a purple paradise has come alive in the lush green Malnad.
This flower has also religious importance. It is believed that Velli put a garland of Gurgi flowers around Lord Subrahmanya’s neck during their marriage. Hence, this flower is called a love flower in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and is offered to Lord Subrahmanya as soon as it blooms in these states.
Another important fact is that this flower blooms only when rain, air, water, light, and nature are all in balanced proportions.
These flowers have medicinal properties and are widely used in the preparation of medicine for various diseases.
Right now, these flowers are enchanting everyone in the hilly Malnad district and will continue to do so till November.
