Tribal man from Jharkhand receives prestigious Diana Award

A 21-year-old young man, Neeraj Murmu begged was conferred with the Diana Award 2020 for fighting against child labour and sending many children to schools. He set up a school at his village in Jharkhand's Giridih in which more than 200 underprivileged children get an education.

Giridih (Jharkhand): Neeraj Murmu, a 21-year-old young man, hailing from Giridih district of Jharkhand, was conferred with the prestigious Diana Award 2020 for fighting against child labour and sending many children to schools.

He was among 23 young Indians recognised in this week's Diana Awards for their noble contribution towards society.

As per Murmu, he was rescued by Kailash Satyarthi's Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) in 2011. After his rescue, Murmu attended school and pledged to end child labour in his village.

He then set up a local school in which 200 underprivileged children got an education in his village.

After getting a positive response from the villagers, the 21-year-old Murmu organised several campaigns aimed at highlighting the importance of education. Due to which a spike in enrollments in local government schools can be seen in the last 6 years. Some of the children are now empowered and aspire to usher positive change in their respective villages in Giridih.
