Ranchi: A hearing related to the controversial remarks made by Rahul Gandhi on the surname of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be heard in the MP/MLA Court today.
Earlier, the court had ordered Rahul Gandhi to appear physically in the last hearing. However, a petition has been filed in the High Court on behalf of Rahul Gandhi in this matter. Rahul has made a demand that he be exempted from physical appearance during the hearing.
All eyes are on the hearing. It may be mentioned that the last hearing of the case was held on May 3. The court then rejected Rahul Gandhi's plea for exemption from physical appearance. The court had ordered him to make a physical appearance today (May 22). This order of the lower court has been challenged in the Jharkhand High Court. Rahul Gandhi's lawyer told that if his petition could not be heard in the High Court before May 22, he would seek an extension from the lower court.
Earlier, a defamation case was filed against Rahul Gandhi for comments on the surname of PM Narendra Modi by Pradeep Modi. In this case, the lower court of Surat has also sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years of imprisonment. Due to this, the Lok Sabha MP was stripped of participation in the discussion in the House. Significantly, a total of three cases were filed against Rahul Gandhi in Jharkhand.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections campaign, Rahul Gandhi said, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi... how come they all have Modi as the common surname? How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" The complainant alleged that Gandhi's remarks were against all persons having Modi's surname/title and were derogatory and defamatory. The petitioner had also filed a defamation suit against the Congress leader.
