Jharkhand Assembly Speaker dwells on Marandi's defection case

The rule book says that the assembly speaker has the right to issue notice taking suo motu cognizance in the defection case. The hearing in Babulal Marandi's defection case will continue in the Tribunal, says Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato in an interview to ETV Bharat's Jharkhand Bureau Chief Rajesh Singh.

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has stayed the notice issued by the Speaker of the Assembly to Babulal Marandi in a defection case.

The matter will now be heard in the High Court on January 13.

Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato, in November, had issued show-cause notices to Marandi, Pradeep Yadav and Bandhu Tirkey questioning their merger claims under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Speaker Mahto said the rule book says that the Assembly Speaker has the right to issue notice taking suo motu cognizance in the defection case.

"I have just gone by the what rule says. The hearing will continue in the Tribunal. As far as High Court is concerned, the matter will be discussed with the legal experts before proceeding further.

Notably, JVM(P) got split after Assembly elections when party chief Marandi decided to return to the BJP and merged his party with it in February 2020.

Following this, a case regarding the violation of the 10th schedule of the Constitution was lodged against Marandi and two other JVM(P) MLAs Pradeep Yadav and Bandhu Tirkey.
