Two Army jawans killed in terrorist attack in Srinagar

Two Army personnel later succumbed to their injuries

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): At least two Indian Army personnel were killed when terrorists attacked a police party in Srinagar's HMT area on Thursday afternoon, police officials said.

"Terrorists fired indiscriminately at Quick Reaction Team of Indian Army in general area Aban Shah Chowk, HMT, Khushipora, Srinagar today afternoon," an official statement from the Indian Army said.

"Being a crowded area, troops exercised restraint to avoid any civilian causalities and collateral damage," it added.

"Three terrorists started shooting at our Army soldiers. Two jawans were critically injured and reportedly succumbed to injuries," Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar informed.

The slain army men were reportedly identified as Ratan Singh and Yash Deshmukh from Sharifabad unit of the Indian Army's Kilo Force.

The IG said that two of the three terrorists were probably from across the border.

"Jaish has active movement here, by evening we will identify the group. Terrorists fled in a car and were armed. Two of them are probably Pakistani and one local," Kumar said.

Meanwhile, the area has been cordoned off by the police to nab the attackers.

The militant attack comes two days before maiden District Development Councils (DDCs) elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
