LeT module unearthed, 6 sympathisers of ultras held in Jammu and Kashmir

A terrorist hideout was busted in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Friday and the police recovered three weapons, seven grenades and ammunition. During the search operation, the police busted the terrorist hideout and recovered arms, ammunition and explosive material, including one RPG launcher and seven plastic grenades.

Srinagar: Security forces have busted an LeT module in Kashmir and arrested six sympathisers of terrorists and seized six vehicles, Kashmir IGP Vijay Kumar said on Friday.

The group was involved in extending logistic support to terrorists for carrying out terror attacks in Kashmir, he told a press conference in Srinagar.

The police said that a series of attacks were reported from August 14 till October 5 within Nowgam and Chadoora police station jurisdictions, including an attack on police and SSB party at Gulshan Nagar in which two policemen were killed and one injured.

Other attacks included the one on a CRPF team of 117 Batallion at Kaisarmullah Chadoora in which one personnel was killed and his weapon snatched, attack on Road Opening Party of CRPF's 110 Batallion near Taingan new bypass that killed two CRPF men and injured four others, and the attack on ROP party of 110Bn of CRPF on the new bypass.

"In order to solve these terror cases, different investigating teams under the supervision of DIG CKR and SSP Srinagar were constituted," police said.

"Using technical and human intelligence, the police was able to identify some suspects involved in these attacks. Subsequently, the teams launched a series of raids in Chadoora Budgam, Nowgam and other areas of Srinagar and picked up around a dozen suspects for questioning."

Police said six persons were later arrested for allegedly providing shelter, transportation and conducting recee of security force deployments before terror attacks.

Meanwhile, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, army and CRPF on Friday on the basis of a specific input regarding the presence of a special police officer (SPO) who had decamped with two AK 47 rifles two days ago along with his associate in Chadoora area of Budgam in Central Kashmir.

The police said as the joint team reached near the target location, the SPO, Altaf, along with his associate fired indiscriminately upon the search party which was retaliated by the joint team leading to a brief gunfight.

"During the ensuing gunfight, the SPO managed to escape from the spot. However, his associate was captured alive and has been identified as Jahangir Ahmad Bhat, an overground worker (OGW) and a notorious stone pelter," the police said.

One of the AK 47 rifles decamped by the deserted SPO was recovered from his possession.

IG Vijay Kumar, while appreciating the police and the security forces for showing maximum restraint by arresting the terrorist associate during live encounter, has appealed to the family of the SPO to help the police in bringing him back.
