Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir): The flowering season in Kashmir is considered to be best suited for beekeeping and apiculturists in the Valley invariably turn to the Flowering Kikar, also known as Gum Arabic Tree, to get the best output.
According to experts, the quality of honey depends upon the season and the honey cultivated in the flowering season is considered the best. In fact, the nectar of Kikar flowers is much sweeter compared to several other trees and this draws bees towards them. This season not only improves the quality of honey but also increases the production capacity of honey, which boosts the business.
Though the honey business could be quite profitable, not many locals of Kashmir take up this profession. This has, over the years, prompted non-locals to launch the honey business in the Valley, taking advantage of its rich fertility.

Honey traders from Uttar Pradesh, who carry out this trade in the Katri Teng area of Anantnag district, said they place their beehive boxes in the flowering season every year. "For the rest of the year, earn our livelihood elsewhere. But in the season of Kikar, we are always here," said a trader from Uttar Pradesh.
As per sources, Kashmir produces 1.75 million kg of honey annually worth Rs 87 crore. However, Kashmiri businessmen said their turnover does not exceed Rs 20 crore due to lack of growth in this business.
Bees need an optimal temperature to produce more honey. Higher or lower temperature can prove hazardous. In order to ensure the bees are in their optimal condition, traders move the hives out of Kashmir when the weather in the Valley turns inclement.
Honey is not only beneficial for the human body but is also used in wax making and manufacture of medicines among others.
