FAKE alert: No, Amit Shah didn't say internet will be snapped in JK, Ladakh

The MHA today clarified that a tweet circulating in the name of Amit Shah that said internet will be snapped in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, was fake. The MHA stated that the Minister has never made such a claim.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday debunked a false claim doing the rounds on social media that internet was going to be snapped in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

According to the MHA spokesperson, a false tweet with the name of Home Minister Amit Shah was being circulated on social media, where the minister was saying that fixed line broadband and internet will be snapped in the two union terrritories.

However, the tweet is fake, clarified the Home Ministry.

"#FactCheck : This tweet is #fake. No such tweet has been done from Union Home Minister’s twitter handle," the MHA spokesperson tweeted.

Earlier on June 17, the Jammu and Kashmir administration extended the ban on high-speed internet in the Union Territory till July 8, citing threats of further infiltration by terrorists across the LoC.

Pointing out the elimination of many terrorists and maintenance of public order - by preventing misuse of data services by "anti-national elements/OGWs to mobilise crowds at encounter sites...", the order, citing intelligence inputs about infiltration of terrorists, said "services that rely on availability of high speed internet are extensively utilised for coordinating and facilitating infiltration", and hence, extends of the current "directions/restrictions" till July 8, "unless modified earlier".

The order, issued by Principal Secretary, Home, Shaleen Kabra, noted that 2G speed internet is available for post-paid and fixed-line subscribers while pre-paid customers can get access after verification as for post-paid service.
