Srinagar: A block development council member was shot dead by militants on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, police said.
Bhupinder Singh, a member of the block development council of Khag block in Budgam district, was shot at by the ultras in his ancestral village Dalwash at 7:45 PM, a police official said.
He died on the spot.
The police official said Singh, who was given two PSOs for personal security, had dropped the security personnel at Khag police station and proceeded towards his house at Aloochibagh here.
However, without informing the police he went to his ancestral village where he was attacked by the militants, the official added.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday night strongly condemned the killing of a block development council member.
The Lt Governor has expressed anguish over the killing of the BDC councillor and said that the heinous act is an attempt to spread fear and vitiate the atmosphere of peace and progress.
He said there can be no justification for such attacks.
The society does not have any space for perpetrators of violence and those involved in this cowardly act shall be brought to justice, he added.
In a condolence message, Sinha has conveyed his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for Eternal Peace To The Departed Soul.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and the PDP condemned Singh's killing.

Very sorry to hear about the assassination of BDC councillor Bhupinder Singh. Mainstream grass root political workers are easy targets for militants & unfortunately in recent years the threat to them has only increased. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.

Deepest condolences to his family. GOI by intentionally discrediting, humiliating & enfeebling mainstream has left them in a vulnerable position. How many more lives will it take for them to realise that their policies towards J&K have backfired? https://t.co/wdKn983IE8
