Srinagar: In a dramatic video released by Indian army on Friday, a newly-recruited militant is seen surrendering along with an AK-47 assault rifle before security forces.
The youth had joined militant ranks just a few days ago.
The video released by the army shows a soldier wearing combat safety gear and holding an assault rifle, trying to motivate militant - identified as Jehangir Bhat - to surrender. Soon, the militant, with his hands up in the air, is seen approaching the soldier, who assures no harm will be done to him.
"Nothing will happen to you, son," the soldier is heard saying in the video as the militant, who is wearing just trousers, takes a breather.
Following which, the youth's uncle is showing gratitude to the security forces for saving his nephew. "Don't let him go with the militants again," army jawan requests youth's uncle.
The army has also issued a statement on the incident saying that "an SPO (special police officer) had decamped with two AK-47 (rifles). The same day, Jahangir Ahmad Bhat from Chadoora went missing. The family was trying to trace the individual. Today morning in a joint operation, the individual was cornered. As per protocol, the Indian Army made efforts to convince the individual to surrender. Later the individual surrendered."
"Indian Army continues to make efforts to prevent terror recruitment and in case of youth joining terror, we provide options to get back," the statement said.
"This is one of the rarest anti-terror operations in the Union Territory which culminated in a surrender. Indian army always displays professionalism during every anti-militancy operation. This incident is a small example of the Army's approach," Army spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia told ETV Bharat on phone.
