Relief for migrant labourers as industrial units reopen

It was a sigh of relief for the migrant workers of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh after the central government issued guidelines to allow agricultural activities and select industries to resume operations. Many stranded workers are getting work and are able to earn their daily wages.

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh): After the central government issued guidelines to ease the lockdown and allow agricultural activities and select industries to resume operations in non-hotspots areas many migrant labourers breathed a sigh of relief.

As some of the industrial units have reopened and development projects have started, migrant workers and poor in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi are now getting work.

Around 1,900 different kinds of work have started in the Mandi district. This includes development projects and private construction works. Due to which about 17,000 labourers have got work in three days.

Thousands of migrant labourers are now happy with the commencement of work of development projects such as MNREGA and several others in the district.

Rasiyan, who is engaged in the construction work of Mini Secretariat building Thunag, says that he was very worried due to the shutdown of construction during the lockdown. Though there was no problem with food because of the free ration distribution by the government, he was concerned about his income for his family as he is a daily wage worker.

At the same time, Makhan Singh, resident of Jammu and Kashmir, engaged in the work of water supply project in Bagsiad, told that he is relieved as the work has started.

Rigved Thakur, DC Mandi, said that apart from MNREGA in the district, about 13,000 labourers are engaged in water, electricity, road projects and construction work of government buildings, while about 4,000 labourers are engaged in private construction work.
