Simaur (Himachal Pradesh): Plastic pollution is a menace and everyone in their own capacity are doing things in order to raise awareness. In yet another initiative, residents of the Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh have taken up an initiative against polythene menace in the tourist state as they have made environment-friendly bricks, that are filled with waste plastic bottles.
The sand-filled plastic bricks are being used for building benches at various public places including schools, panchayat, and parks. With this initiative, the state which is a gateway to the Himalayas hopes to battle its piling plastic problem.
To begin with, the district administration has constructed a boundary wall of a park using several plastic bottles that were collected from garbage and filled with sand and mud for solidity.
Talking to ETV Bharat over this initiative, Sirmaur district collector Rakesh Purthi said, "Recently a boundary wall has been constructed with these poly bricks and today, we are making benches out of this technique. Reuse of plastic is necessary to get rid of this menace. In the coming six months, we seek to make our Simaur plastic-free."
"The bench is being made as a part of an experiment by school children and if it succeeds several poly-walls and benches will be constructed all across the district," Purthi added.
