Himachal woman turns plastic waste into beautiful artefacts

In an innovative way to re-use plastic waste, Kalpana Thakur, a resident of Manali in Himachal Pradesh, creates beautiful artwork out of old and discarded plastic items.

Manali (Himachal Pradesh): Kalpana Thakur, a resident of Manali in Himachal Pradesh has found a unique way of recycling plastic. Through her noble initiative, Kalpana uses plastic waste and creates beautiful artefacts from them.

Kalpana originally belongs to Chaunkhag village in Lahaul Spiti district, but for the last several years, she has been living in Manali with her family.

Many institutions have honoured Kalpana for her commendable work

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Kalpana said, "I was aware that a large quantity of plastic waste is being produced by us. Our dustbin used to get filled with plastic waste at the end of the day. This made me wonder about the harmful effects of plastic on our environment."

Kalpana said that she herself used a lot of plastic initially and faced a lot of problems after the ban on plastic bags in Manali. Later, she started reusing old plastic items by making different types of artwork.

"This hobby has become my passion now. People appreciate me for my work and it further inspires me to continue recycling the plastic waste," she further added.

Many institutions have also honoured her for her commendable work. Kalpana also praised the government's campaign against single-use plastic and appealed to the general public to minimise the use of plastic items.
