Hamirpur(Himachal): Maya Devi, the sanitation worker from Hamirpur, was forced to sell her gold earrings to clear her debts at a nearby ration shop.
From the last three days, employees working with the contractor of Municipal Council Hamirpur are on strike over non-payment of salaries. Scattered garbage is visible to everyone.
Garbage bins were overflowing with trash and waste materials.
Due to the epidemic, the sanitation workers who dispose of garbage every day by risking their lives in the district, are being forced to sell their ornaments to meet their daily requirements.
Maya Devi says that she was forced to sell her earrings because she did not have the money to clear the dues of the ration shop.
Devi says,'' I have three grandchildren and a 1-year-old granddaughter for whom I want milk powder but shopkeeper denied to give it without the money so I had to sell my earrings. The situation is so bad that I had to go from door to door last evening asking for some food to eat.''
Another Sanitation worker Raju says that he has not received salary for the last 3 months.
Neither the city council officers nor the local administrative officer are paying attention to the cleaning staff. Even after seeing heaps of garbage, the authorities have taken no action so far.
Sanjay Kumar, Executive Officer of Municipal Council Hamirpur said that a notice has been issued to the contractor.
